On September 29, Yuko Oshima and several other high-profile members of popular Japanese idol group AKB48 stepped off the dance stage and into the studio to commemorate the launch of their first ever sketch comedy and variety show, Bimyo～, with a special press conference broadcasted live over television and Japanese video-sharing site Nico Nico Douga.
Oshima, also a blooming actress who has appeared in a number of Japanese dramas and movies, surprised reporters and fans during the press conference when she revealed that she will be playing many male roles on the show, some of which require her to wear a bald cap or perform a body tackle.
Many of the girls, including Oshima, have sketch comedy experience from other variety shows, but this is the first time the group will host a genuine comedy program.
During the press conference Oshima mentioned that preparing for the show required mental discipline and watching her more controlled facial expressions as she spoke, we felt that the training must have paid off.
Perhaps wishing test their impromptu skills, one of the reports requested the girls make a funny face, to which they all quickly reacted to with their silliest. However, just as you would except from AKB48, no matter how much the girls distorted their face they were still brimming with cuteness – and even a little sensuality in Oshima’s case.
The girls also mentioned that they have already finished rehearsing a large number of sketches and are looking to write their own for future episodes.
As AKB fans, we’re excited to see the girls expand their activities and success, and can’t wait to see where they take this program.
Bimyo～ is set to air every Thursday at 11:30 on Hikari TV.
