Hello Kitty has long charmed people all over the world with her adorable short stature and prim expression.

When we were walking around Midtown Manhattan during a trip to New York last month, we spotted someone standing outside in a costume that appeared similar to our beloved Hello Kitty, but as we approached the mysterious figure we began to feel a sense of discomfort – something was strange about this Kitty.

Before we could get any closer, the Hello Kitty, desperate for attention, waved at a young boy who was passing boy. However, when the innocent boy looked up, he screamed in horror and recoiled the sight of Hello Kitty’s face.

We ran to see what it was that scared the child. Surely no person, child or adult, should feel anything close to fear after being greeted by the lovable Hello Kitty!

And then it turned its gaze towards us – a gaze of terror and sorrow.

We imagine the designer of this costume intended for the yellow, triangular opening to be Hello Kitty’s nose. Unfortunately, due in part to its awkward positioning in relation to the eyes, the wearer ends up looking more Nazgûl than Hello Kitty.

Despite the boy’s father assuring the boy that the wretched monster was actually Hello Kitty and that he should greet her properly, the boy seemed to be consumed by fear and pled to his father in tears to hurry away, leaving the beast looking bewildered and heartbroken.
