If there’s one thing we like about old Chinese people, it’s that they’ve got spunk. Whether it’s getting up early in the morning and doing Tai Chi in the park or dressing in drag and dancing on the streets every evening, elderly Chinese people just don’t let their age get the best of them.
The men and women of the Funan Province Retired Seniors Activity Center Choir Group are a prime example of this geriatric gusto: the group, whose members’ average age is over 70, caused a sensation in China and abroad this year after performing an enthusiastic—and, frankly, bizarre—Chinese rendition of Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” on television.
Though the lyrics and composition have been arranged to resemble something closer to traditional Chinese music than pop, the song is undoubtedly “Bad Romance”. The choreography is also uniquely Chinese and the group dances with such vigor that we wouldn’t be surprised if they started busting out the Tai Chi right there.
Several members commented on the liveliness of the group’s performance, exclaiming “Singing is just so fun, we can’t help it!” and “We’re forever young!”
Indeed, while it’s easy to laugh at the video and dismiss the group as a bunch of crazy old Chinese people, the 22 year old choir group had surprisingly impressive history behind it.
Even before the television performance, the group had a bit of a name among Chinese choir circles after receiving awards at a number of domestic contests. However, the Lady Gaga performance caused the group’s popularity to skyrocket, and soon offers were pouring in from not just around China, but foreign countries like Taiwan and India as well.
We think it’s only a matter of time before we see “Funan Province Retired Seniors Activity Center Choir Group Sings the Hits” breaking records on international album charts.
