Ladies: do you have a pair of “lucky” underwear that you set aside for those special, sensual occasions?

Japan actually has a word for these: shobu shitagi, which can be translated as “game underwear” or “game panties” (though we know of a couple of New Zealanders who would call them “business panties”). Not only that, a recent poll conducted by Japanese female healthcare product company LC love cosmetic reveals that Japanese women’s preferred color of “game panties” actually differs by region.

Guys: this could come in handy someday, so take notes.

The poll was carried out back in April and surveyed 1137 Japanese women from all 47 prefectures across the country.

While more than half of those polled marked pink as their color of choice, several prefectures in western Japan were revealed to have a high number of women who prefer black, white or “other”.

The results can be broken down by color as follows:

Pink: Hokkaido, Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima, Niigata, Ibaragi, Gunma, Chiba, Kanagawa, Yamanashi, Nagano, Toyama, Gifu, Shizuoka, Aichi, Shiga, Osaka, Tottori, Hiroshima, Ehime, Fukuoka, Kagoshima

Black: Akita, Yamagata, Tochigi, Saitama, Ishikawa, Fukui, Hyogo, Okayama, Shimane, Miyazaki, Yamaguchi, Saga, Oita, Kumamoto, Okinawa

White: Aomori, Kyoto, Wakayama, Kagawa, Nagasaki

Red: Tokyo, Mie, Nara

Other (patterned, etc): Kochi, Tokushima

Pink, centered on Eastern Japan, is the most popular color for panties geographically speaking. Black follows second, focused on prefectures bordering the Sea of Japan as well as the two eastern inland prefectures of Tochigi and Saitama.

White and red made a poor showing on the map, but it’s worth noting that these two colors fall under the domain of two very important prefectures: Tokyo (red) and Kyoto (white). Assuming these results hold true for the entire population, it’s very likely that the number of Japanese women wearing red “game panties” could actually outnumber those who wear black.

And what about the ladies of Kochi and Tokushima who answered “other (patterned, etc.)?” Let’s just say this poll puts empirical evidence to what we already suspected: once you go Shikoku, you never go back.
