Austria is a country of breathtaking natural beauty, of clean and safe cities home to a friendly and welcoming people. It is in this fantastic country, nestled in the picturesque countryside, lie the tiny little village of Fucking.

Fucking (pronounced “fooking”, as in ”booking”) is located in western Upper Austria, about 30 minutes from Salzburg by car, near the pristine waters of Lake Hallstatt.

We visited Fucking during a recent tour of Europe, hoping that traveling off the beaten path would offer us a glimpse of the country that can’t be seen in the more touristy areas.

And also because the place is called “Fucking”, come on.

On the way to Fucking, we asked our driver what the village is like, to which he replied: “Fucking? There’s nothing there. A restaurant, a bar, some shops, a post office…” Despite all the attention it gets for its name, Fucking has a population of only about 100 and really is just a tiny village in the countryside.

After arriving at Fucking we stepped out of the car and surveyed the tranquil scenery that spread out around us. Small farms and quaint houses lay scattered about among fields of green and small patches of forest, connected together by a well-kept asphalt road. It was like a scene from a fairy tale storybook and much to our surprise, there was absolutely no fucking to be found.

We were captivated by the beauty and tranquility of the small village. Japanese travelers tend to limit themselves to well-known travel spots like Vienna, but we think there’s something to be said for taking a day trip out to the countryside and visiting a village like Fucking to see the “real” Austria.

As a side note, we were told that many visitors from English-speaking countries visit Fucking to take pictures in front of the traffic signs, make out or even…well, you know. A little tourism is probably a good thing for a tiny place like Fucking, but please try not to do anything that would trouble the locals, even if it is written on the signs.
