Earlier this month, Japanese video sharing site Niconico launched a new English interface in an attempt to make their content more accessible to the rest of the world. But while the promise of boundless Japanese lulz seems appealing, those unfamiliar with the site may struggle to find a reason to not just stick with YouTube.

The most notable feature and mainstay of the Niconico community are the embedded comments, which scroll across the screen as the video plays. This creates a sense of a shared watching experience by allowing viewers to respond directly to events occurring in the video with insightful commentary, such as “lol” and “wtf.” The problem is that most of the videos on the site are still in Japanese, which may be a turn-off for newcomers who can’t talk the talk.

Luckily, Niconico has been adding more content that should appeal to people universally, regardless of language barriers. For example, earlier this month, Niconico launched their first official adult video (AV) channel. You don’t need to know Japanese to understand what’s going on there! And think about the possibilities: thanks to Niconico’s scrolling comments and internet anonymity, the internet can now laugh at cheesy porn together— in real-time!

The channel is run by Total Media Agency (TMA), a Japanese adult video company that specializes in cosplay videos and parodies of famous anime series such as The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Neon Genesis Evangelion. This makes them fit right in with the notoriously otaku-centric Japanese Niconico community, in theory.

TMA’s videos have indeed been the subject of attention for some time on Niconico, with user uploading the laughably-bad non-porn segments of their parody films:

Their K-on! video series was particularly popular for being creepily faithful to the original (except for all the sex):

TMA had been running an unofficial channel on the site, happy to be at the receiving end of the joke and even streaming live interactive interviews with AV actresses on the site.

However, with their new official channel (NSFW), TMA has brought a library of bona fide porn to Niconico, and has been receiving flak from the community for doing so.

“A lot of underage kids use this site. Parents and the government are going to have a fit,” comments one user.

While Niconico has hosted R-18 content on the site for awhile, this is the first time they have allowed videos with blatant nudity and sexual content. Not that an enterprising middle school student has to look far to see porn on the internet…

While most of the full-length videos on the channel are viewable by paying members only, TMA has thrown up a number of clips and choice titles for free. Since the videos are hosted on Niconico, the scrolling comment function is intact so you can enjoy your porn with the rest of the internet. If you have a free hand, that is.
