I sat down to write this introduction with half a mind to just plonk the video in the centre of the page and leave you to it. Never before has the term “WTF” been more relevant.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is the “Sexual Harassment Interface”, a series of daikon radishes wired up to electric sensors that produce erotic moans and groans whenever they are touched. With just a few pieces of simple electrical equipment, these poor, innocent radishes are transformed from simple brassicas to legs, arms, butts and, well, whatever you want them to be.

Never before have vegetables been more NSFW…

This project is the brainchild of Etsuko Ichihara, a former member of Tokyo Waseda University’s digital media group.

With the goal of making thoughts, feelings and abstract concepts physical, Ichihara and her friends put together this bizarre setup, which uses electrical pressure sensors that activate prerecorded aegu moans (or “moarn” as the rather charming typo displayed during the video puts it) whenever the radishes are caressed, as if being stimulated sexually.

The installation will be displayed on December 22nd at the special Nighttime Niconico Scientific Society meeting; it’s theme being, of course, “Japan’s shame” and fetishes. Needless to say, those under the age of 20 are not permitted to enter.
