beer pong02

Booze lovers, come on! It’s time for a news update regarding beer pong, the world’s most wobbly sport! In case you’ve never heard of it, beer pong sees two teams stand against each other and take turns tossing ping-pong balls into their opponent’s cups of beer while getting increasingly intoxicated. The game originated in the United States, where in fact its popularity has grown so large that it spawned the World Series of Beer Pong in Las Vegas! With all of the drunken mayhem that this game encourages, it’s hard to find a sport more silly and unhinged than beer pong.

Our Japanese RocketNews24 reporter had his first introduction to beer pong near a college campus in the Philippines, where the popularity of this tipsy tournament has really started to take off!

In a shopping mall about a block away from a famous university in Manila, there’s a facility reserved exclusively for playing beer pong. As soon as classes are over, many of the nearby school’s elite students will get together and go crazy over a game… or two or three.

The rules are fundamentally the same no matter where you go, but there’s often some level of regional flair tacked in place, depending on the town. Here’s how it works in Manila:

1. Break up into two teams with two people each.
2. Teams stand at opposite far ends of a ping-pong table and each line up six plastic cups, so that they’re in the shape of a triangle.
3. Equally fill each cup with about two fingers’ worth of beer. In the Philippines they often use bottles of San Miguel Light (330 mL), a popular brand in the region.
4. Take turns tossing ping-pong balls into the cups of beer on the opposite end of the table. Bouncing the ball is fine, but not a requirement.
5. If the opposing team lands a ball in the other team’s cup, the receiver must remove the ball, drink the beer, and set aside the cup.
6. The game continues until one side has no beer cups remaining and is thus deemed the loser. The losing team buys all of the beer used in the game.

※Note that heckling, laughing, dancing about, and generally causing a distraction are completely within the rules, though we didn’t see much of it being employed here.

So why is there so much beer pong in the Philippines these days? The reason is fairly straightforward and easy to understand. According to the academic elite, “It’s because it’s a fun way to get drunk with your friends!” Indeed.

In case there are any underage readers out there who want in on the fun described, we recommend trying the same game with cups of soda. For all of our adult readers, just go for it! Though, do be sure to drink responsibly. If beer pong is the world’s most idiotic sport, then what good is practicing if you’re going to forget it all by morning?! Give yourself a happy buzz and enjoy!
