Kind of looks like sushi, tastes 100 percent like a doughnut. Mister Donut, the popular doughnut chain in Japan, has created a special sushi-themed menu for their stores in Thailand. Officially named SushiDo, these sweet treats have won over sushi and doughnut fans alike.
As interesting as these sushi-doughnut hybrids are, the commercials are the best part of the SushiDo campaign. Just take a look at this one for example:
▲ They exported the craziness of Japanese commercials quite nicely.
A second commercial takes a cooler approach to selling these outrageous doughnuts:
Some of the doughnuts even have fake ikura, salmon row, atop a sugary bed of frosting rice:
▲ Using chopsticks to place the fake salmon row on the fake sushi. Nice touch.
Cutting into others reveals brightly colored goo:
Some even have a band of frosting seaweed to mimic the look of nigiri sushi:
▲ Too bad they don’t include a sugary dipping sauce to mimic soy sauce or frosting wasabi…on second thought, maybe it’s good they didn’t…
As far as we know, SushiDo hasn’t made an appearance in Japan. But with Japanese netizens crying, “Kawaii!” at the sight of these sushi doughnuts, we wouldn’t be surprised to see them in Japan in the near future.
