korean psychopath01

Early last month, news of a particularly grotesque murder unsettled the people of South Korea. Not only was the under-aged victim raped and killed by her 19-year-old assailant, the boy went on to mangle her corpse and send pictures of the broken body to his friends using his phone. As if killing another person wasn’t bad enough, to further violate the body and broadcast this fact without any hint of remorse can only mean that this fellow is one truly deranged psychopath.

Now, all of South Korea is on high alert for psychotic behaviors. Online quizzes such as the “Psychopath Test” have been trending in Korean forums, helping Internet users identify the mentally disabled, starting with themselves. Take a look at the test and see how you rank.

If you answer “yes” to ten or more of the following 12 questions, you just might be a psychopath:

1. Do you often come up with excuses for breaking promises and have trouble taking responsibility?
2. Do you often use your personal charm to manipulate people?
3. Do you get particularly excited when witnessing a dangerous situation?
4. Did you enjoy acts of cruelty when you were young?
5. Do you try to garner sympathy using lies?
6. Are you often envious or otherwise jealous of others?
7. Do you lead people on with strings of deceit?
8. Do you trick people by hiding your true emotions behind a poker face?
9. Do you think about implementing people as pawns?
10. Do you lose interest in things quickly?
11. Do you always hide any nerdy behavior or eccentricities?
12. Are you always weighing the advantages and disadvantages of a given situation?

So, how many psychopaths do we have amongst our readers? An overwhelming amount of test takers in South Korea found out that they just might be a psychopath (according to this quiz anyway). If we resemble South Korea’s results in any way, there’s bound to be quite a few more out there! After so many Korean bloggers came forth as mentally disabled, the conclusion was finally reached that “We’re all psychopaths here.”

Of course, this online quiz is in no way valid. While the list of questions was obviously derived from the Hare Psychopathy Checklist, it is grossly truncated. And regardless, someone can only be diagnosed with psychopathy if administered the test by a qualified and experienced clinician under controlled circumstances. Also, just to make things extra clear, even if you were to be diagnosed as a psychopath, that would not make you an intrinsically deranged murderer. While there is currently no cure for psychopathy, rehabilitation clinics are in place, and the quest for proper treatment is ongoing.

So fear not! Even if you did answer “yes” to all of the above questions, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be the next murderer or that you’re even a psychopath (this was an online survey after all). Just don’t go around killing teenage girls like that actual psychopath from South Korea; that’s one thing we all can probably agree on…
