Go on, take a wild guess. What is the kit above used for? More tellingly, do you know how to use these items yourself? Are you an experienced user, a semi-pro, or do you just like to watch others use them?

The object on the upper left features a beautifully rounded tip and a convenient finger grip for when you need to give it some extra oomph. The vial of clear fluid on the right may help you to achieve your, er, goal more smoothly. Then we have what appears to be a packet of wipes to mop up with. These days, these things are not common, but ten years ago they were used frequently. Most likely, your parents used them. But what did they use them for, exactly…?

Did anyone notice the telling clue written on the box above?

“Computer Accessories”

That may have tipped off a few folks to the true purpose of these implements. Think about it… you’re enjoying some alone-time with your computer… then you notice something dirty. Oooh. What are you gonna do?

Ten years ago, that dirty little something may have been your old-school mechanical ball mouse. These days mice have mostly gone optical (sadly not all 3D yet), so handy ball-cleaning products like these are no longer in common usage. That’s right, this is a mouse cleaning kit!

▼Yeahhh, double click that mouse.

Before we start to fondly reminisce about how people in the bad “old” days were such anally-retentive neat freaks, let’s also remember how the balls of old mice rolled around in the dirt all day long and soon got filthy enough to impair their performance.

And just as I did, at first glance you too may have received quite a different impression of the intended use of this product. Ask yourself this: Who is the real dirty one? Is it the mouse… or is it you??

▼Grip firmly, and make sure you get right in there. Preferably use something with a little more girth.

Reminds me of going to architecture school and finding out firsthand what a “poker vibrator” was for…
