If you’ve ever yearned for an authentic potato chip in Tokyo, then it’s time to get excited because specialist french fry shop, “And the Friet”, is set to open in the Hiroo district today!

Whether you know them as fries or chips, true fans will tell you that nothing compares to the friet. Born in Belgium, there’s a whole culture around eating them, which involves choosing an accompanying sauce or dip and tucking in outside the friet stand. Now, thanks to the arrival of And the Friet, Tokyoites can experience the fun of the friet, hand-made to order.

Step 1 to ordering your friets: Choose either a “box” or “flower” packaging. The flower pack (above) comes in two sizes: small for 500 yen (US$4.88) or large for 600 yen (US$5.86).

The box pack above sells for 800 yen (US$7.81) or 900 yen (US$8.79) and includes friets, dip and one choice from falafel, chili con carne, sausage, fried chicken, fried fish, or popcorn shrimp.

Once you’ve selected your packaging, it’s time to choose your potato and dips to go with them. Bintje potatoes are imported from Belgium. Satsuma potatoes, from Okinawa, come out a vibrant shade of purple. There’s a multitude of dips to choose from, so you’re bound to find something that appeals to your taste buds.

Next, choose your potato style. Choose from straight, wedge, curly, half, crispy or hash cut. Who says potatoes aren’t versatile!?

Finally, once you’ve chosen your potato, cut, salt and dips, it’s time to huddle up at the counter or pick a spot outside to chow down.

You’ll probably need something to help wash those spuds down, and thankfully the drinks menu even includes Belgian beer for a true taste of Belgium! The first 200 customers to visit the stand today will also receive a free original tote bag. Guess we’ll be lining up for a quick Monday morning snack, then. See you there!
