If you’re the kind of person who loves the idea of gaming on the go but just can’t abide touch-screen controls or fiddly portables, Sony may have just unveiled the perfect product for you.

Announced earlier today, the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is designed to work seamlessly with PlayStation 4 consoles, allowing remote play via wi-fi – a function previously only available to PlayStation Vita users. Better yet, mobile gamers can attach a DualShock 4 controller to the tablet using a special Game Control Mount, meaning that they can play PS4 games pretty much anywhere while still using their regular controller.

The Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact was announced earlier today alongside the 5.2-inch Xperia Z3 smartphone, the successor to the Xperia Z2. Both the smartphone and tablet will support PS4 remote play and are due to go on sale in the US this autumn, but by the sound of it owners of older Xperia devices won’t be receiving a software update allowing them to take their PlayStation 4 on the go.

▼ At just 6.4mm, Sony’s not kidding when it says the Z3 Compact is slim.

As both a PS4 and Vita owner, I love the fact that I can access my home console games via my portable pretty much anywhere I like. The only gripe I have–and with the Vita in general, for that matter–is that my monstrously large hands tend to cramp up after any decent length of time with the portable, and its analogue sticks are far too small and loose for my liking. The fact that the Vita is missing a couple of the DualShock 4’s buttons, too, means mapping them to the Vita’s touch pad during remote play, which while serviceable isn’t the most intuitive way to control a game.

While I’m not really in the market for a new tablet right now, I have to admit that Sony’s announcement of the Xperia Z3 is incredibly tempting. Being able to play home console-quality games while out and about, on an eight-inch screen and with my preferred controller no less, is something of a mobile gamer’s dream.
