Sony’s PlayStation 4 has been on the market for fewer than 18 months, but already we’ve seen about as many special-edition incarnations of the console, from a lacklustre The Evil Withinthemed unit, to an undeniably cool metal Dragon Quest model, to one, for some reason, based on Disney’s Frozen.

And now, thanks to a joint venture between Konami and Sony, there’s yet another model joining the special-edition ranks: The Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain PS4.

This new-look PS4 puts the decidedly uninspired Ground Zeroes-themed console we saw last February to shame with a colour scheme that genuinely suits the PS4’s angular design and looks to have had some real thought put into it. Better yet, thanks to the combination of black, gold and burgundy (the last of which is apparently based on protagonist Snake’s bionic arm) it reminds us an awful lot of the classic Nintendo Famicom (NES in the west) controller, itself a design so adored in Japan that it is still being replicated in everything from in-line mics to smartphone chargers decades after its release.

Sony has announced via its official PlayStation website that the console will go on sale as part of a bundle containing a copy of Konami’s upcoming game Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, which will go on sale on September 1 for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. A PC version, delivered via Steam, will follow on September 15.

As pretty as the new Metal Gear PS4 is, however, there are currently no plans to release it outside Asia. Still, we can drool, can’t we?
