When it comes to sex, people like it all kinds of different ways. Some people don’t even like it at all, but as long as it’s consensual, we don’t care, as long as you’re happy! Nevertheless, we’re also pretty curious about it–maybe we’re busybodies or maybe the idea of people smooshing themselves together is just too funny not to think about.

Regardless of the why, we are naturally curious about sex in Japan. And we bet you are, too! So here’s a recent survey done with 3,000 Japanese women to find out how many have had one-night stands!

A recent poll by News Post Seven, a Japanese news site, asked 3,000 of its female readers how many of them have had a one-night stand. The answers were then broken down by prefecture to help us see if we can learn anything about Japan’s various regions. The average age of the respondents was 42 years old and all of them non-virgins. News Seven Post also enlisted the services of Shinichi Yano, a researcher who literally wrote the book on the characteristics of women in the various prefectures of Japan.

So, which prefecture’s women have the most experience with one-night stands? That would be Miyazaki Prefecture!

According to News Seven Post‘s survey, 61.5 percent of the respondents from Miyazaki prefecture reported having had a one-night stand at one point. They were followed closely by Aomori Prefecture, with 60 percent of the respondents from the prefecture revealing that they have had one-night stands. Fukushima Prefecture came in third with 59.1 percent.

In fact, it looks like the top ranked one-night stand prefectures were either in Kyushu or northeastern Japan, with Kumamoto and Oita, both in Kyushu, rounding out the top five.

In Yano’s analysis, he suggested that it could be that women in Miyazaki Prefecture don’t take sex too seriously. Incidentally, an April survey by News Seven Post found that 84.6 percent of respondents from Miyazaki answered yes to the survey question, “Do you like sex?” Perhaps unsurprisingly, Fukushima came in third in that survey with 81.8 percent of the prefecture’s respondents answering yes to the question.

Yano also suggested the situation could be influenced by a prefecture’s proximity to a major metropolis without having one itself. This hypothesis is somewhat supported by two of the lowest-ranking prefectures in the survey, Tochigi and Yamanashi, which are close enough to Tokyo for it to be easily accessible for day trips. Tochigi Prefecture was ranked 45 out of Japan’s 47 prefectures, with 20.7 percent of their respondents reporting having had a one-night stand. Yamanashi was dead last with only 5.2 percent of the respondents saying that they’ve had a one-night stand. One woman who lives in Yamanashi explained that since she lives so close to Tokyo she rarely has the chance to have an “overnight adventure” in the big city. Gifu, which was ranked 44th, is close to Nagoya.

Okinawa, which was ranked 46, seems to be a bit of an anomaly here, but Yano suggests that the prefecture’s unique characteristics might explain its ranking. Apparently women in Okinawa have their first sexual experiences at relatively young ages, but they also tend to get married and have children young as well, meaning they simply might never get the opportunity to have a one-night stand.

Unfortunately, the site hasn’t listed the full range of statistics, so we can’t compare, say, Tokyo and Osaka, but they did reveal that the average of all the prefectures was 39 percent.

While we’d hesitate to take this survey as actually representative of women in the various prefectures, it is an interesting look at how rural folks might react to Japan’s dizzying but exciting urban centers.
