Thinking of applying for higher education in Japan but don’t know where to start? We’re sending our applications off to Kyoto Gakuen University, the education providers with an official anime character called Sono Uzumasa, who features in TV commercials, billboard advertising and even on city transport cards.

If you thought education was boring, it’s time to see it through the eyes of a cute anime character born out of a joint collaboration between the folks at Kyoto Gakuen University and the Kyoto Municipal Transportation Bureau. The university’s latest commercial, broadcast on Kansai television from July 3, features well-known undergraduate, Sono, who’s surrounded by equally cute friends (who we’ve been acquainted with for a while now), soft afternoon sunlight and butterflies.

The private university in Kameoka, Kyoto, featured Ms. Uzumasa in a similar ad aired late last year. Since then, she’s become more well-known with residents around Kyoto and the rest of the nation.

▼ Sono has hundreds of Twitter followers. Born on May 15, she’s a member of the tea ceremony club and is blood-type O.

For a limited time, Sono will be featured on the city’s multi-ride “Torafika-Kyo Card”, which can be used on Kyoto subway trains and city buses. A different designs will be available for purchase at subway station ticket vending machines in Kyoto from July 4, 11 and 21.

Sono’s star is set to rise even further, as September sees the release of a web movie and other related promotional activities. Surely that’s proof right there that attending Kyoto Gakuen University can lead to great things!
