Summer has always been my favorite season, and I’m positive the original reason was the generous, three-month summer vacation of the American school system. Yet even as a legal adult, with work responsibilities that continue nonstop for all 12 months, this is still my favorite time of year.

Every now and then, I’ll catch a perfect moment of soothing, oven-warm calm, and in that instant, I don’t have a care in the world. There’s a certain contentedness that can only come from a quiet summer afternoon, and it looks like it affects cats as well as humans, as this adorable kitty in Kagoshima Prefecture shows.

It’s time once again to check in on Shiro, the star of YouTube channel Kagoneko. While it’s not his entire repertoire, Shiro is especially well-known for his series of videos where he balances things on his head, like dried persimmons and carp streamers.

Today, though, the 12-year-old kitty has something a bit more orthodox on his head: a straw hat. Wait, actually that’s only orthodox with humans. With cats, it’s ridiculously cute.

Adding to the countryside atmosphere is the fact that Shiro is sitting in a keitora, an ultra-compact truck that farmers often use to get around while doing field work.

”Yep, them ‘taters is comin’ along real nice.”

Adding even more cuteness to the scene is the fact that Japanese cars have their steering wheels on the right, so Shiro is actually in the driver’s seat. Midway through the video, he seems to remember there’s somewhere he’s supposed to be, so he turns his eyes to the road ahead and even looks to put one hand on the wheel.

Of course, no matter how convincing his farmhand impression is, Shiro is still a cat, with legs that are far too short to reach the pedals, so after staring back in his side mirror for a few moments without receiving any help, he eventually gives up on the idea of driving off. That’s OK, though, because the longer he stays put, the longer we get to stare at his adorable face

”Hmm…maybe I should plant some okra next year…”
