A tweet by UHB News, a Hokkaido-based news show, received a lot of attention online late last week for its description of an unusual event involving a case of public exposure. Though nothing anyone would consider especially important news, the tweet was retweeted over 10,000 times in just a few days.

What could have engaged that many people? Well, if you’re a fan of Death Note, you might recognize a certain part of this description…

UHB News, a Hokkaido-based news show, is probably not the most famous news show in Japan, and their tweets look like they average no more than 20 retweets per post. But one tweet last week has spread around the Internet like wildfire! Its unusual content should make it clear why the tweet got so much attention:

Man in full-body tights exposes himself

Yesterday at 4:50 p.m., in the area of 7-7 Tonden, Kita Ward, Sapporo, a woman witnessed a man with his lower half exposed. The man was around 35 to 40 years old, thin, and about 170 to 175 centimeters tall [about 5’7″ to 5’8″]. The man was wearing full-body black tights and had what looked like black wings attached to his back. Sapporo Kita Ward Police #SuspiciousPerson

While it may be odd for a news station to report on something as minor as public exposure, the Internet masses seem to be certain they’ve figured out who the culprit was.

It’s certainly hard to deny that the description does seem to describe Death Note‘s Ryuk.

But not everyone was convinced. Another Twitter user suggested the villain might have actually been this fellow. Creepy as this guy is, we’re still thinking it was a bored Ryuk out to disturb some Hokkaido residents.

Of course, other Internet commenters had quite a bit to say about the incident!

“Well, what’s wrong with angels being naked?”
“If he was wearing full-body tights, how did he expose himself?!”
“I’d also like to know the method he used to expose himself with full-body tights…”
“There’s not much you can do about angels, is there?”
“This kind of thing is where monster stories come from.”
“So it was a one-horned creature? Maybe it was a unicorn!”
“Hokkaido is like Japan’s version of Australia.”

We are going to assume the commenter was referring to Australia’s plethora of unique wildlife and not remarking on the country’s citizens’ pastimes.

If you happen to have any information about this tights-wearing creep, we’re guessing the police of Kita Ward would be happy if you informed them. Though we’re not sure they’re prepared to take on a perverted shinigami…
