Don’t try this at home!

Even if you’ve put together a pretty sweet cosplay outfit, it kind of defeats the purpose if you get dressed up just to snap some pictures in your living room. A proper costume needs a proper backdrop, after all.

That’s why Japan’s Cosnavi organizes cosplay photo shoot trips to locations such as rural schoolhouses, centuries-old farmhouses, and abandoned factories. This spring, Cosnavi will be taking interested cosplayers to Mt. Ifuneyama in Tochigi Prefecture.

Characters from fantasy or science fiction series should look right at home in the rugged terrain, and the fact that many tokusatsu shows have been filmed at Mt. Ifuneyama should make the trip even more attractive to fans of Japan’s costumed superhero programs. But if you want your photos to be especially action-packed, Cosnavi has a bang of an idea.

Those pyrotechnics aren’t digitally added. Cosnavi will actually have technicians on-site setting up explosive charges, which, do-it-yourself spirit of cosplay notwithstanding, is always a job to be left to professionals.

On the other hand, if it’s more of a slow burn that you’re after, you can opt for the fire photo shoot. Sure, the name could use a but more pizzazz, but you can’t say it’s not descriptive, since Cosnavi staff will set the ground ablaze for you.

The trip’s standard participation fee is 5,000 yen (US$42), which includes shuttle service to and from nearby Iwafune Station (Cosnavi can also arrange bus transportation to and from Tokyo). While the standard fee gets you access to the mountainside photo shoot areas, there are additional charges for the special fire-based activities. The explosion photo shoot will cost you an extra 1,500 yen, plus 500 yen for each person in the photo, for which Cosnavi guarantees three blasts. The fire photo shoot carries a heftier premium, with a surcharge of 5,000 yen per person.

However, if you’re looking to add a little after-dark fun to the trip without putting a strain on your wallet, there are also flaming torches available for 1,000 yen each.

▼ With the right angle, you can even make it look like your band of adventurers is delving into a dungeon in the bowels of the earth.

Cosnavi is staging two trips, officially called “Ikusa Haru no Jin Iwafuneyama Cliff Stage,” on March 19 and 20. Reservations can be made here through Cosnavi’s website.
