Teapot Bag

This unusual teapot-shaped bag is creating quite a stir in Japan.

Crafty Japanese Twitter user Shinobu Koyama has created some amazing designs with fabrics and materials over the past two years but it’s her latest project that’s really turning heads. Since she posted photographs of her new eye-catching accessory on Twitter, with the simple message, “I made a travel bag”, Koyama’s images have been retweeted more than 14,000 times and picked up by a number of news outlets in Japan.

▼ This suited gent looks like he should be holding a briefcase but instead, he’s chosen to carry a bright gold-coloured bag in the shape of a plump teapot.

The teapot bag is both good-looking and functional, with a reinforced handle and a zippered “lid” to keep belongings safe inside. The well-made accessory is just the latest in a long line of innovative one-off designs by the talented artist, whose collection to date includes bags, clothing, scarves, and zippered pouches.

▼ Here, a traditional kimono becomes a frilly dress, complete with a colourful parrot plush toy that slots neatly into the obi sash around the waist.

▼ And a soft, squishy muscle vest adds a bit of humour to a hero’s outfit.

Koyama is continually honing her craft skills. Here, she’s expanding on her creative repertoire with some woodworking practice.

▼ Her talent for fabric-based design is clearly evident in her bag range, which includes small grenade bags

▼ And a gorgeous shoulder bag in the shape of a train seat.

▼ There are zippered pouches with some unusual details

▼ And monstrous scarves that make it look like you’re in the grip of a giant.

▼ And for something a little more sporty, there’s an interesting scarf with one end that acts as a sleeve for your arm!

To see more of Koyama’s works, you can follow her on Twitter or stop by her website. Currently, a number of her designs are being exhibited and sold at the ground floor library at Funatsuru Kyoto Kamogawa Resort in Kyoto.
