These candy bouquets are a thoughtful, handmade gift for the sweetheart in your life.

If you’re anything like me, you probably dread upcoming birthdays of your friends and family members. It’s not because you hate celebrations, and not even because you’re cheap and hate spending your money on other people. It’s because you never ever know what to get them for a gift. Everything at the store seems too impersonal, and they very well could already have it anyway.

In that case, something handmade can be the perfect solution. Even if you’re not the crafty type, something like this cute “sweets bouquet”, which has been making appearances on Japanese Twitter recently, is simple enough for anyone to do and is easily customize-able to include any combination of candies, flowers, and any other goodies you can think of.

▼ You could have it be all sweets and no flowers, but toss a balloon in there for a little something different.

▼ You can stick with only one type of candy as an accent to the flowers.

▼ …or pick treats with wrappers that match the colors of the flowers.

▼ A variety of bright colors with ribbons to match makes for a really cute bouquet.

This video shows one way to arrange a bouquet…

You’ll need some nice wrapping paper, a few stems of flowers (real or fake, it’s your choice!), small straws, cellophane and masking tapes, a pair of wooden chopsticks, glue, tissue paper, and a variety of treats. Things like suckers, which already have a stick in them, all you need to do is stick it in the straw and secure with cellophane tape. For other shaped goods, cut a half circle out of one end of the straw, like so…

…and secure the item to the end with tape.

Then, you’ll want to arrange your flowers and tape the stems together to hold them in place (for real flowers tape may not work very well, so a rubber band would be recommended instead). Take one chopstick and cut it down to about two-thirds of its original size. Cut half-circles out of the ends of all the straws as shown before, and arrange them around the shortened chopstick, securing with tape.

Arrange the treat bouquet with the flowers, and tape the chopstick to the flower stems with masking tape. Cover the end of the stems with tissue paper, and wrap the decorative wrapping paper around the bouquet, securing with tape or a bow.

▼ And your gift is complete!

Of course, there are any number of ways to put your bouquet together, so do whatever works for you.
