Developer shows off ambitious fan project in preview video.

There are some truly impressive illustrations to be found in the artwork of the Yu-Gi-Oh! collectible card game. That said, those still drawings can’t quite match the dynamism of visuals for the franchise’s anime arm, in which a duelist’s cards hover in the air and transform into the mythical beasts and warriors that fight for him.

But fan developer General Head, who also goes by Generalkidd, is aiming to make his and other fellow fans’ Yu-Gi-Oh! battles look more like those of the series’ anime cast.

While it’s still in the very early stages of development, General Head recently shared a video of his work so far on what he’s dubbed Real Life Yu-Gi-Oh! for HoloLens, a version of the game to be played with Microsoft’s HoloLens mixed reality smartglasses. By overlaying the graphics onto the wearer’s field of vision, his deck is arranged before him, with the cards seemingly floating above the ground. Selecting one to play calls forth a three-dimensional model of the respective monster.

Once summoned, the wearer can walk up to and around his monstrous minions, viewing them from a variety of perspectives.

With 7,649 Yu-Gi-Oh! cards in existence, General Head has a long road ahead of him, and probably an uphill one to boot, given that this is an unlicensed fan project. Still, he’s off to a very cool start, and if you’re interested in following his progress, the project’s website can be found here.
