From Love Live! to The iDOLM@STER and Puella Magi Madoka Magica, we take a look at some of the most popular characters and cosplayers at this year’s event in Japan.

The annual World Cosplay Summit 2016 was held in Nagoya on the weekend, drawing cosplayers out into the summer heat with an impressive display of costumes, coloured wigs and contact lenses, all designed to bring characters to life from some of the country’s most popular illustrated music videos and storylines. Matching the cosplayers in number were the fans venturing out to photograph them, and it wasn’t long before social media channels like Twitter were lighting up with images of fan favourites, showing off all their cute poses and facial expressions. To see some of the best from the two-day event, check out the photo collection below.

Mumei, from Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress, showed off her tough yet feminine nature in a pink-and-white ribbon-adorned outfit, with an oversized gun by her side.

There were plenty of magical girls in the crowd, but Homura Akemi, from the anime series Puella Magi Madoka Magica, stood out with her outfit.

Rem, from the Japanese light novel series Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World, looked charming with her sky blue hair and maid hairband, despite the fact that Ram, her twin sister from the series, was unable to make it on the day.

The hugely popular Love Live! series was well-represented at the event, with Minami Kotori throwing out a few cheeky poses.

Nozomi Tojo kept things cool in a revealing number, with her dark purple hair tied in two low twin-tails over her shoulders.

Love Live! Sunshine!! girls Riko Sakurauchi (left) and Yoshiko Tsushima (right) brought some charm to the show in their shiny costumes.

Ranko Kanzaki from THE iDOLM@STER: Cinderella Girls, grabbed the attention of onlookers with her gorgeous Gothic Lolita style.

Yuuri Wakasa, from the series, School-Live!, showed off her figure in a cute camo bikini.

The cute cat-eared Georgette Lemare from Strike Witches revealed her fighting pins in a white jacket.

While Ako Tamaki, the shy star of the And you thought there is never a girl online? Japanese light novel series, wore a pink-and-white outfit with white suspender stockings.

The world of Japanese racing was represented with a Race Queen styled in an outfit from the Pacific Racing Team x GIRLS und PANZER collaboration.

And, finally, no cosplay event would be complete without the appearance of vocaloid Hatsune Miku. This one replicates her look in the “Love is War” video clip.

If you’ve been inspired by the characters and their outfits, now’s the perfect time to get started on your costume for next year! To find out more about the massive event, stop by the official website for more details.
