Chain expands to new city and adds traditional local favorites to the menu.

Japan is just about always down for dining at themed restaurants, regardless of whether or not the settings and situations being saluted really have anything to do with food. So when a cafe comes around that’s based on a character with a legitimate connection to cuisine, it’s sure to be a hit, which explains why Sanrio’s Pompompurin, the loveable pooch who gets the last portion of his name from the Japanese word for “pudding,” is about to open his fourth eatery in Japan.

Building on its success in Tokyo, Yokohama, and Osaka, the Pompompurin Cafe will be expanding its operations to the city of Nagoya, where its newest branch is scheduled to open next week. Like the chain’s other locations, the menu is packed with food and drinks featuring the Sanrio star’s likeness, but with a few special offerings exclusive to the new branch, such as the 1,590-yen (US$15.40) hitsumabushi, a Nagoya specialty of grilled freshwater eel served over rice and flavored with spices and green tea.

If that sounds a bit too exotic for your tastes, there’s also the nap-time rice omelet, with Pompompurin relaxing under a blanket of fluffy egg. Priced at 1,490 yen, it comes with a ceramic mug that you can take home.

Pompom’s famous posterior is on proud display in the 990-yen cream stew.

Moving on to the desserts, while this may look like a pork cutlet with miso sauce (another Nagoya favorite), it’s actually a deceptively disguised cheesecake, which comes with the same mug as the rice omelet, for 1,390 yen.

Other sweet options include the 1,100-yen fruit tart

…and the 1,190-yen baked apple dessert.

Pompom is even ready to help quench your thirst, with strawberry and kiwi soda floats, available for 750 yen each.
