Sip Coffee With Customers From Over 100 Countries at Sakura Cafe in Ikebukuro

We all love cafes, don’t we? They provide welcome respite from the hassles of daily life while you relax over a nice cup of coffee or tea, whichever you’re in the mood for. Well, one of our reporters at Pouch website learned of an interesting cafe located near Ikebukuro Staion in Tokyo and decided to investigate.

According to the shop website, the Sakura Cafe Ikebukuro is an open terrace cafe located on the first floor of the Sakura Hotel Ikebukuro, where guests from approximately 110 countries around the world stay each year. Open 24 hours every day of the year, the cafe offers a breakfast, lunch, afternoon (tea time), dinner and late night menu, and in particular, they have a breakfast buffet (called the “morning set”) that costs only 320 yen (about $4). That certainly caught our attention! They also offer a weekly selection of 4 lunch plates, each offering a dish from a different country. Sound interesting? Let’s hear what the reporter, Yayoi Washinomiya, had to say after making a visit to the cafe. Here’s her account: Read More

Horror Movies Recommended to Scare Away the Summer Heat! So, Which Horror Movies are Popular in Japan?

It’s a fact of life that summers in Japan are hot and humid, and the Japanese people have a long history of trying to find ways to cool down in hot weather. One tradition that has come about as a result is the telling of terrifying horror stories in the summer, for the purpose of getting “chilled with terror”. And right now with the summer in full swing in Japan, we are indeed in need of some “chilling”.

Well, to help those of us desperate to feel just even a little bit cooler, Japanese entertainment group Culture Convenience Club (CCC), which operates TSUTAYA, one of the largest Video/DVD rental chains in Japan, has released a list of the 20 most-rented horror movies in Japan over the past three decades (1983 to 2012 to be exact). So, let’s see which movies made the list! Read More

Taking Hello Kitty Love to the Extreme – Does This Impress You or Freak You Out?

Okay, I admit that I’m a fan of Hello Kitty. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be roaming the food department of the Tokyu Toyoko Department Store in search of Hello Kitty sweets and bentos on my day off . I even admit to having owned a Hello Kitty laptop computer at one time – and not the toy kind either, but a 30th Anniversary Commemorative Edition NEC LaVie computer. But even I have to say that the picture of the Hello Kitty decorated car above leaves me, shall I say, at a loss for words. Read More

It’s not Exactly Disney Magic, But See the Lovely Ladies of Disney Transformed – Into Characters From a Popular Japanese Manga/Anime Series!!

Fans of Japanese manga and anime may be familiar with the Sailor Moon series - you know, the manga/anime where a group of cute teenage girls in sailor-style uniforms (with the obligatory short skirts, of course) use their magical powers to kick serious butt and save the world from the forces of evil. The original manga/anime started quite some time ago in 1992, and after capturing the hearts of not just little girls but adult fans as well, has remained a popular icon of the magical-girls (“maho-shojo“) genre.

In the past, we’ve brought to you a story on our Japanese site about some cool Sailor Moon drawings by a Mexican artist, but this time we have an awesome rendition of Disney heroines posing as Sailor Moon characters created by an artist from the Netherlands. And we have to say that we are seriously impressed by how perfectly natural the characters all look in the picture! Read More
