Just last week while picking up milk at my local 7-Eleven, I found myself chuckling at the sight of a teenage boy trying to peek at the adult magazines arranged on the rank right beside the comic books. I had to admire his technique as he stood holding a weekly manga collection open in front of him while staring, unblinking and open-mouthed, at the covers of the naughty magazines to his right.

Alas, this young man and thousands like him could soon be reduced to checking out far more explicit and abundant images of girls via the internet as “a certain convenience store” is rumoured to be clearing its naughty magazine section away very soon.

In a completely new take on this well-known scam, Shigeyuki Goto was arrested on suspicion of extortion and attempted extortion by phone. However, instead of the typical monetary gain he was hoping his victims could sing him a song.

Any anime or manga fan will tell you that the sight of characters suffering sudden, sporadic nosebleeds when they’re sexually aroused is not uncommon in Japanese-created works.

Comic Market, often abbreviated “Comiket“, is often described as “the world’s largest self-published comic book fair.”

However, anyone familiar with Japanese self-published comics, or doujinshi, knows much of the material these indie groups put out are usually not very wholesome in nature. In fact, a good number of the books sold at Comiket are hardcore pornographic comics featuring popular video game and anime characters. What’s more, many of the groups selling pornographic material hand customers their merchandise in custom-designed bags that usually feature pornographic imagery as well.

So imagine you’re a mother waiting at the train station with your 5-year-old child on evening in early August.
