Japanese apparel maker brings back “Derelicte” style with cardboard box bagsHobo-chic is back! Just when you thought Mugatu’s Derelicte style was long gone since the peak of Zoolander, here it comes again in the form of a bag that’s made to look like a shabby cardboard box.

The “You’re such a nerd” line of designer handbags was produced by Animation Addict Store and Yotsuba and comes in three different styles: carton bag, pouch, and tote bag. Each item is made from a specially created type of washi (Japanese paper) called naoron. Although technically paper, naoron is surprisingly difficult to tear and water-resistant.

The design of these unique handbags may not be for everyone. Thanks to the special Japanese paper, at first glance they look just like cardboard boxes. The design even features large barcodes, care mark stamps, and small creases, making the “You’re such a nerd” line look even more convincing.

Fans of the manga Yotsuba might recognize the familiar double circle and triangle face of Danbo printed onto one of the “cardboard” sides of these bags.

If you want to purchase your own, orders will be accepted from the Animation Addict online store until June 28. The carton bag and tote bag both sell for 5,250 yen (US$51.80) each and the pouch is 2,940 yen (US$29.01).

It isn’t too expensive compared to the price of other designer handbags, but considering you could achieve a similar look by looping some string through a few holes in the top of a cardboard box and drawing on Danbo’s face, these bags are a little on the pricey side.
