“Nose yakiniku” brings smell-o-vision to your smartphone, promises to replace actual meat

Have a hankering for some yakiniku (grilled meat) but don’t have enough money? Just supplement your meal with scented air. That’s what one Japanese company is suggesting with their new Hana Yakiniku, or “Nose Grilled Meat” system. Just plug the specially-made scent cartridge into your smartphone, download the app and you’re on your way to a cheap and (questionably) satisfying meal.

The Hana Yakiniku kit is made by Scentee and will go on sale on November 15 for 3,480 yen (US$35.57) with a free smartphone app. Replacement cartridges are a mere 1,000 yen (US$10.22), a price that pales in comparison to a yakiniku dinner at a restaurant. Scentee actually makes a number of scented cartridges for their other Smell-O-Vision-inspired app that allows users to send scents like apple, corn soup, and coffee to their friends.

But Hana Yakiniku is different than any of the other cartridge systems. According to Scentee, you’re just four steps away from replacing actual food with their meaty app, saving money and calories.

▼ Choose one of three menu items: Short ribs, beef tongue, or buttered potato“Nose yakiniku” brings smell-o-vision to your smartphone, promises to replace actual meat

▼ Insert the Scentee cartridge“Nose yakiniku” brings smell-o-vision to your smartphone, promises to replace actual meat

▼ Smell the delicious menu item of your choice“Nose yakiniku” brings smell-o-vision to your smartphone, promises to replace actual meat

▼ Eat rice with the scent of grilled meat“Nose yakiniku” brings smell-o-vision to your smartphone, promises to replace actual meat

It’s that simple. Scentee suggests that college students on a budget, women watching their weight, and couples who would otherwise go out to eat should use the Hana Yakiniku app instead of buying expensive meat.

Not convinced? Maybe the official Hana Yakiniku video will persuade you to buy this high tech meat-alternative:
