A kind Japanese netizen has compiled a list of hobbies based on their respective difficulty and how much they would appeal to women for the benefit of all mankind. We felt you might appreciate the info, so decided to share with you the kind of hobbies that are considered attractive to Japanese women (at least according to the creator of this chart!), as well as those that not only require a lot of time and effort but may in fact be a big turn-off for some.

If you’re looking for a Japanese girlfriend, perhaps it’s time to take up a new hobby. Or maybe ditch your old one!

The currently circulating chart is arranged such that the more difficult and demanding hobbies are arranged vertically (easier at the bottom, tricker at the top), and a hobby’s “attractiveness” displayed from left to right, with the pastimes that are the most “appealing” to women being closer to the latter.

On the unattractive-yet-easy extreme, we see hobbies like hanging out on Q&A sites, frequenting anonymous BBS, playing erotic video games (regular video games were considered much more favorably) and visiting museums, as well as some slightly more unusual entries like doing jury duty and tracing the origins of banknotes.

If you’re up for impressing the ladies with your hobby without having to put too much time and effort into it, however, this chart suggests trying things like becoming a movie buff or TV drama fan, getting into astrology (not to be confused with the science of astronomy), meditation and taking lots of walks. Apparently donating blood also falls into this “easy but hot” category, but we don’t recommend that you do this too often for the good of your own health, nor do we think telling people that you consider this a “hobby” rather than something you try to do frequently a wise idea.

If you don’t mind challenging yourself with a slightly more advance hobby while still appealing to Japanese women, you may want to try interior design, growing a home garden, learning to play a musical instrument, or being into (and dare we say owning a few) cars. However, if you’re looking for love and are putting most of your time and effort into hobbies like antiques, military collectibles, cross-dressing and pop idols, you might want to reconsider, as they all feature on the “easy yet unappealing” side.

Since this chart appeared online, Japanese netizens have jumped in on the discussion of supposedly “hot” hobbies, with some even being inspired to try something they’d never heard of:

▼ “I didn’t know what ‘tracing the origins of banknotes’ was so I looked it up. It actually seems pretty interesting.”

▼ “Why are ‘traveling’ and ‘railways’ the opposite of each other? LOL”

▼ “Is keeping a tropical fish aquarium that difficult? If that’s the case, then I’d be superman…”

This is of course but a humorous interpretation of hobbies and stereotypes in Japan, so we suggest taking the chart with a pinch of salt. Don’t ever give up what you love!
