Thailand has always been known for its extremely terrifying repertoire of horror movies. However, the tropical nation’s taste for horror appears to extend into their manga culture as well. A sample of their convenience store comic book selection are so packed with grotesque images that we wonder whether kids who see them on the shelves don’t have nightmares.

Thailand doesn’t mess around when it comes to horror. Remember: this is just a selection of comics on sale next to bread and milk in convenience stores, and not the horror section of a comic book shop. No wonder Twitter users felt the need to snap a few photos of their pages!

▼ Frightening monsters painted in vivid colors

▼ Melty-faced zombies…

▼ A pretty girl – and zombies…

▼ Head and torso stabbing. Lovely…

▼ A woman(?) turns purple, is eventually reduced to a purple limbless skeleton.

▼ Well, that’s definitely very different from the Twilight we know…

Of course there are also regular adult magazines and cute girls manga be to found in a typical Japanese convenience store, but Thai convenience stores are known to feature a large selection of these horror stories that are usually about 50 pages thick, printed on low-quality paper, presumably meant for a quick perusal and subsequent toss. Their content definitely challenged our boundaries of horror and imagination…

Next time when you’re travelling in Thailand, why not drop by a convenience store and take home some of these for your friends as a cheap but unique souvenir?
