ghibli posters top

Last month we saw one artist’s interpretation of Studio Ghibli films as super-detailed movie posters. This month though we’re feeling a bit more minimalist, so we want to showcase the work of artist Jackman Chiu. His simple yet impactful poster designs of the Ghibli movies are eye-catching, mysterious, and best of all make for a really good game of Guess That Ghibli Film!

So put on your Ghibli fanboy/fangirl hats and get ready to tally some points and see how many minimalist movie posters you can match with the correct title!

Unfortunately Jackman Chiu didn’t go for the ultra-minimalist route and decided to include the names of the films on the bottom of the posters. Since our team of RocketNews24 lawyers said we couldn’t alter the images in any way, that means we have to do this guessing game the old fashioned way.

Here’s how to play:

Step 1: Scroll down SLOWLY until you see the end of the colored portion of the poster. If you see some Japanese text, stop! You’re about to see the title.

Step 2: Try to guess what film the poster is for.

Step 3: Scroll down a tiny bit more to see if you got it right.

Got all that? All right, don’t forget your pen and paper to tally points too. And no cheating! Ready? You may begin!

▼ Let’s warm up with a nice, easy one. What Ghibli movie is this poster for?
Don’t forget: stop scrolling at the end of the green part or if you see Japanese text!

Ah yes, those rascally kodama tree spirits. This poster makes you not only want to find out more about them, but also what the heck they’re staring at so intently too.

▼ So that first one was pretty easy. How about this one?
Don’t forget: stop scrolling at the end of the pink part or if you see Japanese text!

The attacking paper shikigami are a great choice to represent Spirited Away. They create an air of mystery and gives a sense of actually being whisked away by some magical force.

▼ Got them all right so far? Try this one on for size.
Don’t forget: stop scrolling at the end of the purple part or if you see Japanese text!

Jiji the cat gives just the right hint that there’s a witch in this film.

▼ All right, this one’s the last of the easy ones. Good luck!
Don’t forget: stop scrolling at the end of the blue part or if you see Japanese text!

I love how Sōsuke’s boat being at the top of this poster implies that there’s more going on underneath the water in this movie than above.

▼ Okay, the warmup is now officially over. Take a good guess at this one.
Don’t forget: stop scrolling at the end of the grey part or if you see Japanese text!

You didn’t forget about the susuwatari dust creatures, did you? If you did, you might want to check that corner of your room you keep “forgetting” to clean.

▼ Are you still at one-hundred percent? Maybe not anymore after this one.
Don’t forget: stop scrolling at the end of the blue part or if you see Japanese text!

It’s Sheeta’s crystal amulet. Definitely not a smiling one-eyed alien.

▼ How are you doing? It’s only getting harder from here out.
Don’t forget: stop scrolling at the end of the blue part or if you see Japanese text!

Calcifer the fire demon, hanging out right above the title spoiler, just like we’d expect him to.

▼ What the…?
Don’t forget: stop scrolling at the end of the red part or if you see Japanese text!

Oh, it’s a bunch of ohm insects. Actually, now that I see it, this is one of my favorites.

▼ All right, last one. If you get it right consider yourself a true Ghibli fanatic.

It’s the crosshairs in Porco’s plane. Super sweet poster, super hard to guess.

So how did you do? Did you get the full nine out of nine points? I’d say anything seven and above is fantastic, five and above is great, and three and above is okay. If you only got one or zero, then get yourself to your local library right away and borrow some of these classics!
