Police in Takasaki, Gunma Prefecture, are looking for a man who threw sulfuric acid at two women in separate attacks on Thursday night.

According to police and media reports, the first attack occurred at around 6 p.m. on the second floor of the JR Takasaki Station building. A 44-year-old woman who was shopping told police she felt a stinging sensation after a liquid was sprayed on her leg and then realized that it had burned through her stockings, NHK reported. Part of her handbag was also burned.

She was taken to hospital to be treated for burns to her right calf.

The second incident occurred about one hour later at a shopping center four kilometers way. TBS reported that a 23-year-old woman suffered burns after a man threw a liquid at her leg.

Police identified the liquid as sulfuric acid from remnants left at the scene.
