The controller is a total fake, but we’re still impressed with the work that went into making it.

It probably doesn’t come as much of a surprise to learn that the new “leaked NX controller,” purported to be the controller for Nintendo’s new, upcoming game system, is a total fake. But what may surprise you is just how much work went into actually making a mock up of the design.

After the first round of photos appeared, YouTuber and NeoGAF user Frank Sandqvist apparently made an actual “controller” and photographed it. While plenty of people were still skeptical, the thing certainly looked authentic, despite being as real as Mario and Luigi. And his video explaining how it was built shows just why it was so tempting to join #TeamReal!

In the YouTube comments, Frank offered some extra insight into how it was built, telling one commenters that in total it cost around US$20 to put together. Of course, that’s not factoring in all the equipment and experience required, but it still shows just how much can be done with a 3-D printer. As he says towards the beginning, “I thought it would be funny to see how easy it would be to recreate that Photoshop leak in real life. It turns out, it’s pretty easy!” Which means we can probably expect more realistic fakes in the future.

And, in case you’re wondering, it appears neither of the fakers knew each other before this whole thing began…but we can’t help thinking they should work together on something real in the future!
