Who’s craving some “Stressful Society Noodles?”

The success of Sanrio’s Gudetama belies the character’s identity as a lazy anthropomorphic egg. Less than three years after Gudetama’s debut, it’s become one of the company’s most popular creations, parlaying its popularity into multiple restaurant ventures.

Still the latest Gudetama eatery, which started operations on January 14, is an unexpected development. That’s because it’s not just a themed cafe, but a maid cafe as well.

One of the primary appeal of maid cafes is the earnestly hard-working spirit of their employees, who make quite a show out of how much they enjoy catering to the whims of their customers. But fear not, because the Gudetama maid cafe, a collaborative effort held at maid cafe @Home Cafe in Tokyo’s Akihabara neighborhood, is more about adopting the visual style of Gudetama than the character’s lackadaisical attitude. As such, diners can look forward to attentive hospitality as the staff prepares and serves a special lineup of Gudetama entrees and desserts, including the Just Let Me Sleep Like This Forever and Dream of a Wonderful Maid sandwich plate (1,400 yen [US$12])…

As with most modern themed cafes in Japan, ordering certain menu items will get you a place mat or coaster to take home.

There’ll also be plenty of exclusive Gudetama maid merchandise for sale, such as keychains, mirrors, and pouches.

But since this is Gudetama we’re talking about, you can’t expect the character to go on working forever, and so the Gudetama festivities at @Home Cafe will only be going on until February 28.
