Come for the J-pop idols, stay for the water discharging from their mouths.

J-pop idol group Shizukaze & Kizuna has caused a stir online with an innovative stage trick of drinking water from a bottle and then emitting the water out of their mouths over adoring – mostly male (probably all male) – fans.

You can check out the video of them performing their stage trick here:

You’d be forgiven for thinking their managers came up with this groundbreaking idea, with the looks on the girls’ faces before they each walk up to the front of the stage and proceed to drink from a water bottle and then spray it all over the concert crowd. After the second idol spits over the crowd, some guy in a hat (presumably one of the group’s managers) directs her to jump onto the crowd.

Not sure if it would be much fun for the poor idol. Perhaps terrifying would be a better word – given she is completely in the hands of a bunch of middle-aged men screaming for more spitting water.

The video has recently gained attention on the Internet but was released in 2012, the same year Shizukaze & Kizuna was formed. The group is currently made up of six girl members and originated from two separate J-pop idol groups, Shizukaze and Kizuna.

Of course, increasing interaction with fans is not that new in the Japanese pop-idol world. The now world-famous AKB48 all-girl group ingeniously enhanced their popularity by conducting regular handshake events where fans could get up close and personal with their idols. However, the group had to rethink this strategy in 2014 (or at least tighten security) after two AKB48 members and other staff were attacked by a man wielding a saw at a handshake event in Iwate Prefecture.

Here are some online comments reacting to the spitting-water stage performance:

“I thought this may be a ruse but they actually did it!”
“Someone put their hand up her shirt.”
“This is a bit off-putting.”

You can also see Shizukaze & Kizuna here, singing at a promotion gig at Tower Records in Shinjuku:

Crowds at Japanese pop idol concerts have been known to get a bit wild with reports of audience members dropping their pants and eager patrons crashing through security barriers – let’s just hope being sprayed with spit water won’t cause them to lose control but might actually cool them down.
