This Japanese kitty’s got something to say about all this vet business.

Imagine this… you’re snoozing away on a plump velvet cushion, belly full of prime salmon, perhaps dreaming about mice. All of a sudden, a fleshy hand clamps you by the neck and hoists you into a tiny cage, which is then dumped roughly into a rumbling vehicle. The entire scene is grimly familiar… they’re taking you to the vet.

Perhaps now you can visualise the distress felt by this kitty, who was so alarmed about an impending meeting with the scary people in white coats that he (or she?) started actually speaking Japanese!

If you listen carefully to the video below, you can hear the cat saying “Yabai” which in Japanese can mean many things, from “wow that’s not good”, to “oh heck son!”

Kitty’s owner, Twitter user @nekonote000, claims that Kitty only ever makes this particular vocalisation in the car on the way to the vet, and stops immediately upon arrival at the clinic.

The adorable vid has already gone viral in Japan, having racked up over 2 million views on Twitter, and over 70,000 retweets. The comment sections is also full of fellow cat owners who claim that their pets also seem to know when they’re off to the vets, as well as others who report hearing the cat saying different words in Japanese:

“It really does sound like it’s saying ‘yabai’!”
“The cat looks so serious, I feel bad for laughing.”
“To me, it sounds like it’s saying akan (Kansai dialect for “no”)…”
“I wasn’t expecting it to REALLY sound like yabai, but omg, it does.”
“I think it sounds like ‘yappari’ (“I knew it!”)…”
“Poor thing! This is so cute though, I can’t take it! Yabaiii!”

Let’s hope Kitty didn’t have too traumatic of an experience at the vet’s! And if you’re in the mood for more Japanese talking cats, here’s one that says “ololiloliloliloliloliiiloli”
