Airline pilot flies with broken door handle, tells crew member to hold it in place during flight

As much as we love travelling the world and seeing all the awesome that is out there, we have to admit that the price of plane tickets can end up being an insurmountable obstacle to globetrotting adventures. Fortunately, the rise of low-cost carriers (LCC) has helped alleviate some of burden of flight.

Of course, you may wonder if such airlines offer the standards and safety that we expect when being hurled through the sky in a giant metal cylinder. Well, if you’re afraid of flying and you want to see the world on a budget, you probably won’t want to read this story about a pilot who knowingly flew a plane with a faulty door handle…TWICE!

Watch “Sh*t Koreans Say” for an interesting take on Korean stereotypes about foreigners

In the past we’ve brought you Sh*t Japanese Girls Say and Sh*t My (Japanese) Mom Says, both of which really hit home for me as a former Japanese home-stay student and expat in Japan. Still, I often find myself wondering what life is like for other expats around the world, especially those living in other Asian countries like Korea.

Thanks to Sh*t Koreans Say, the latest addition to the ever popular Sh*t ___ Say meme by Korean Junkies, I feel like I now have a slightly better idea.

Italian newspaper claims referees in Korea-Japan World Cup were paid to make bad calls

The 2002 FIFA World Cup was a landmark event for soccer (or football for the majority of the world). It was the first World Cup to be held in Asia, and also the only one to be jointly held by two countries: South Korea and Japan.

Unfortunately it was also a standout event for several suspicious, South Korea-favoring, referee calls that were made. The scandal has lain dormant for over a decade, but is now resurfacing following the recent arrest of several FIFA officials, at least one of whom has been linked back to the dubious referee decisions made in the 2002 tournament.

Check out the dirtiest festival in all of South Korea by heading down to Boryeong

Here at RocketNews24, you will often read about crazy Japanese festivals, but the rest of Asia also has some pretty fantastic festivals as well. Last year we sent some of our writers to the giant water festival in Thailand where they had a wet and wild time and came back thoroughly rinsed off.

Don’t expect to stay as squeaky clean at this festival in South Korea, though. The Boryeong Mud Festival is coming up next month and it puts any mud wrestling event you have ever seen to shame.

Did South Korean cutie DJ Soda get plastic surgery after high school? Some fans think so

These days, it’s not really out of the question to think that people, especially young Korean women, may have had plastic surgery at some point. Really, it’s almost becoming the norm in some places. However, we’d like to think that there are still plenty of natural beauties out there too.

Recently, some photos surfaced on the Internet that are supposedly the high school photos of the South Korean beauty, DJ Soda. While normally one might think, “Wow, she really grew up!”, thanks to the cosmetic surgery culture in South Korea, people are saying, “Hey, wait a minute, did she get work done?”

Washington Post writer catches heat for “dirty Korean beer” joke

There’s a reason I don’t write for the Washington Post. Actually, there are about a thousand reasons, almost all of which pertain to my own ineptness. Another one these reasons is that I occasionally write some embarrassing joke that gets completely misunderstood and blows up in my face.

So, I can relate on some level to the Washington Post’s writer and Tokyo bureau chief Anna Fifield. Her tweet, which jokingly translated a customer request sign as “Don’t bring your dirty Korean beer in here,” has led to some considerably harsh feedback from Japanese Twitter users.

Teacher facing charges after swallowing class pet alive

Regardless of the country you do it in, teaching can be a tough profession. Tasked with handling and helping to raise humanity’s most valuable resource, our educators must also put up with tight restrictions and even tighter budgets.

It’s a heavy burden and as a result not surprising when a teacher cracks under the stress every once in a while. I’m not saying that is what happened on the morning of 11 May in a classroom in South Korea, but it certainly seems like a plausible explanation of the case of the teacher who swallowed a live hamster in front of their class.

Gotta deep-fry ‘em all! Pikachu cutlet on a stick being sold by Korean food stalls, online shop

There’s a balancing act involved in creating snack foods in the image of a beloved children’s character. Take too few cues from the original design, and your customers won’t be able to recognize the character, thereby missing out on all the fun. On the other hand, go too far in the opposite direction and you end up with something like these cutlets from Korea, which make it look like you’re literally eating the flesh of Pikachu.

Anime idols going abroad as Love Live! movie announced for release in U.S., 12 other territories

Not so long ago, being a Japanese idol singer was purely a domestic gig, with even the biggest stars of the genre remaining more or less unknown outside their home country. But thanks to the spread of Japanese pop culture around the world over the last decade and a half, that’s not really the case anymore. These days, it’s not uncommon for J-pop idols, especially those with an anime connection to boost their foreign exposure, to make appearances overseas.

Now, in a case of animated art imitating life, the high school idols of Love Love!, Japan’s biggest current idol anime hit, will be heading abroad as the upcoming Love Live! theatrical feature has been announced for international release.

South Korean media largely underwhelmed by portrayal of Korea in Avengers: Age of Ultron

Avengers: Age of Ultron (also known as Avengers 2), which opened in theaters across South Korea on April 23, is perhaps the most eagerly anticipated movie of the year. While the blockbuster sequel has already pulled in a hefty US $28.2 million in opening weekend revenue in Korea alone, several Korean media outlets are voicing their disappointment with the “unremarkable” scenes filmed in Korea, citing their lack of distinctive features identifying the setting as the cutting-edge, modern city of Seoul.

Possibly the biggest ever marriage proposal made with Post-it notes!

Is it just me or does everyone seem to be going to great pains to propose these days? It’s almost as if nine out of ten proposals I see on my Facebook feed are done either while on an overseas vacation, or completed with the help of a dozens of people and involving some kind of coordinated event.

For the record, I’m not against huge marriage proposals. If it makes the couple happy then it’s the best way it should be done, but on a totally personal level, I think a proposal is an extremely private affair that should be kept between the couple. However, I am a sucker for creative ideas, and sometimes, some really creative proposals do make me wish that I was proposed to in such a memorable manner. Like this three-storey-tall Post-it proposal that was made possible with 250 Post-it “elves”!
