A single catch by a fan brings out the worst and best in Japanese baseball.
On 15 September in a game between the Tokyo Yakult Swallows and the Hanshin Tigers, Swallows’ outfielder Wladimir Balentien scored his 56th home run of the season. This would break the season record set by Sadaharu Oh in 1964.
The celebration was to be short lived, however, as later that same game Balentien hit home run number 57. With this home run, Balentien also broke the Asian season home run record previously held by Korean Baseball Organization’s Lee Seung-Yeop.
