With this cool set and a short list of ingredients, you’re never more than a couple of minutes away from enjoying some traditional Japanese desserts.
After delighting home chefs with a love of Japanese food with its Easy-Bake-style ramen maker and spinning sushi press, kitchen gadget manufacturer Mega House is ready for dessert. Set to go on sale soon is the company’s Gohan de Wa Sweets, or “Japanese Sweets from Rice,” which gives even first-timers a simple way to make your own mochi treats!
The ingredient list for making mochi is pretty short. You’ll need 200 grams (7 ounces) of cooked white rice, 18 grams (0.6 ounces) of starch, 30 milliliters (1 ounce) of water, and 3 grams (0.1 ounces) of sugar. Toss everything into the set’s included pot, place the lid on top, and turn the handle to stir the contents.
Once the mixture is a uniform consistency, remove it and pop it in the microwave for two minutes. After that, put it back in the pot for more stirring to knead the rice dough (Mega House says about 300 turns should do it), and your batch of mochi is done.
Mochi can be used to make a variety of traditional Japanese desserts. The most basic are dango, round dumplings of pure mochi that you can roll in the palm of your hand, but the Gohan de Wa Sweets set also comes with molds to help you make daifuku (mochi dumplings with a soft filling), or extra-cute bear-shaped dumplings.

The Wa de Sweets is priced at 3,980 yen (US$39) and goes on sale in early September.
