The announcement made today by Warner Bros. and Amuse USA has our imaginations running wild with all sorts of animated idol-metal fusion scenarios.

Ever since we interviewed Babymetal back in 2103, the Japanese metal-idol band has taken the world by storm, topping iTunes sales charts, appearing on The Late Show with Steven Colbert and even performing with Judas Priest vocalist Rob Halford onstage. Now, fresh off their 2016 world tour, the group has announced that they will be teaming up with Warner Bros.’ digital studio Blue Ribbon Content and Japanese powerhouse Amuse Inc’s subsidiary, Amuse USA, to star in an original short anime series set to debut in the States.

According to the group’s Facebook announcement, the three baby-faced teenagers fronting the group, SU-METAL, YUIMETAL, and MOAMETAL, will travel through a secret portal to enter an animated world. The press release from Warner Bros. goes one step further, revealing that the action-adventure series will revolve around a magical world of heavy metal music under attack, with one lonely god, Kitsune, creating warrior band BABYMETAL to save the day.

▼ We hope to see the white-faced Kitsune fox in the new anime series.

As they go about saving the world of heavy metal, SU-METAL, YUIMETAL and MOAMETAL will ultimately redefine the genre, much like they have in real life, according to the release.

▼ Few heavy metal fans could have seen this coming when it was released in 2011.

The series will also feature new live-action performances from the group. With the girls known for their cute choreographed moves set against a background of heavy metal, we can’t wait to see what they’ve got in store for the upcoming anime storylines.

▼ Whatever they come up with, we’re sure they’ll find a way to get their awesome karate moves in there!

With the manager and creator of BABYMETAL Key Kobayashi (a.k.a. KOBAMETAL) also collaborating on the new digital series, we’re hoping the new anime will retain all the crazy Japanese pop idol elements we’ve grown to love from the fusion band. While the release date is yet to be announced, we’ll be watching developments carefully so keep an eye on this space for more details!
